Chronic DiseaseIn 2005, the Youth Risk Behavior Survey began including questions about asthma. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 14% (9.9 million) of U.S. children under the age of 18 have ever been diagnosed with asthma. Furthermore, 6.8 million children (9%) currently have asthma1. Asthma is a major source of childhood morbidity resulting in 7 million outpatient visits, 754,000 hospital emergency department visits, and 198,000 hospitalizations nationwide in 20042. Asthma-related illness resulted in the loss of an estimated 12.8 million school days in 20032. In 2007, approximately 78,500 adults in Hawaii (8%) currently had asthma3. Nationally, 20% of high school students have ever been told by a doctor or nurse that they had asthma4. 1 Bloom B, Cohen RA.
