Tobacco use accounts for 19 of every 100 deaths each year in the United States. Tobacco use contributes to heart disease, cancer, respiratory disease, and infant deaths. In Hawaii, 1200 adults die each year from smoking, and between 130 to 230 adults, children and babies die each year from environmental tobacco smoke. The annual health care cost in Hawaii directly caused by smoking is $336 million. ¹
