Alcohol abuse is the leading cause of death among youths. It is associated with motor vehicle crashes, homicides, suicides, and drowning. Long-term heavy drinking can lead to heart disease, cancer, alcohol-related liver disease, and pancreatitis. Alcohol use during pregnancy is known to cause fetal alcohol syndrome, a leading cause of preventable mental retardation.

Alcohol abuse continues to be a problem among males and young adults. Nationally, binge drinking has remained at the same approximate level of 17 percent for all adults since 1988. The binge drinking rate among young adults aged 18 to 25 years is about 32 percent.¹ Midanik et al. (2004) reported that there were over 75,000 alcohol attributable deaths in the United States in 2001, and identified excessive alcohol consumption as the third leading preventable cause of death in the U.S.²
