Our CommunityA picture of a community’s population characteristics helps shape our understanding of important influences on health. The differences in age, employment, and education in a community provide clues to causes or solutions to our health. EmploymentThe pressure associated with employment such as income, stress and family time can impact overall health. IncomeOn average, people with higher incomes experience less disability and live longer than people with lower incomes. Households that do not have a livable income (defined as below 185% of poverty level) usually qualify for governmental assistance. EducationHigher levels of education are associated with healthy behaviors and an increased use of preventive health care. The more education a person receives, the better his/her health tends to be. AgeThe age ranges of a community can help prioritize which health indicators are of greater importance. For example, what are the immunization rates in areas with a high population of children? How many long-term care beds are needed for areas with a higher proportion of older adults?
