Injuries

Injuries occur in many different ways. Some injuries occur because of domestic violence or fall accidents while others can occur from car accidents or firearms. Hawaii’s adult population possession of firearms in or around the house increased from 8% to 12% from 2001 to 2004. Of the four counties, Kauai showed the most increase from 16% in 2001 to 25% in 2004.1  Injuries are responsible for a considerable amount of suffering, disability, death, and economic costs. Every day, more than 400 Americans die from various injuries, amounting to one out of every 17 deaths in the U.S. each year. The risk of injury is so high that most people will experience a significant injury at some point in their lives.
