Infectious Diseases

Infectious diseases are a continuous threat to all persons, regardless of age, sex, lifestyle, ethnic background, and socioeconomic status.  They result to suffering and death and inflict a financial burden on society. Although modern advances have conquered some diseases through antibiotics and vaccines, new ones are constantly emerging (e.g., HIV/AIDS, Lyme disease, and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome), whereas others are reemerging in drug-resistant forms (e.g., malaria, tuberculosis, and bacterial pneumonias).1

With proper hygiene and precautions, fighting infectious diseases is easier.  Steps to stop the spread of an infectious disease includes proper hand washing techniques, taking certain precautions, following the nationally recommended immunization schedule for children and adults, and taking medications correctly.
