How to use these reports

Reports available on this site highlight key health indicators for the state of Hawaii. Individual health indicators may help public and private sectors to target their priority health needs, prevention, and intervention strategies.

For example, a program trying to implement a tobacco cessation effort can look at various data on tobacco cessation or usage from several data sources.

From Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), the report titled, During the Past 12 Months, Have You Stopped Smoking for One Day or Longer Trying to Quit Smoking, depicts relevant statistics by Year, State, County, BRFSS Age Group, DOH Race-Ethnicity, Gender, County and Community, Education Level, Employment Status (Grouped), Household Income, Island, Marital Status (Grouped) and Poverty Level. Furthermore, this report is available by individual year, and aggregates of 3 and 5 years.

From Youth Tobacco Surveillance and Evaluation System (YTS), the reports, Quit Attempts and Used a Cessation Program, depict relevant statistics on middle age and high school students attempt to stop tobacco use by Year Total, Gender, Race-Ethnicity and Grade Level.

From Vitals Statistics, the report, Tobacco Use During Pregnancy, depicts relevant statistics by County, Race-Ethnicity, and individual years.

Or, if the program would like to see smoking use among pregnant women:

From the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS), the reports,
Smoking 3 Months Before Pregnancy, Smoking During Last 3 Months of Pregnancy, Smoking Now (Baby is Currently 3-6 Months Old), depict relevant statistics by County and Race-Ethnicity, and by the years the survey was administered.

There are many ways HHDW reports can be of use to advocacy groups, community health organizations, policy makers, and individuals concerned with their community’s health

These statistics can be used for the following:

  • Program planning—addressing populations and areas in need
  • Creating health policies
  • Writing grant applications
  • Community mobilization and action - Assessing the health status of your community
  • Setting benchmarks to measure the progress of our health

As is the case with all statistics, these must be used with care. The following limitations apply to the data contained in this site:

  • A rate or percentage is only reported when the unweighted counts exceed certain limit. For example, data from the BRFSS survey is only reported when the number of respondents to a question is greater than 50.
  • Often, at the community level, rates and percentages represent very small numbers.
  • Use caution when making comparisons—health data changes slowly over time. Large differences between years may not be statistically meaningful.

Please refer to the “The Hawaii Data Guide” document for a basic introduction to the interpretation of statistics. Also available is the HHDW Glossary, which is a compilation of most commonly used terms in the HHDW web site.
