Healthy LifestyleThe power of improving the health of ourselves, our families, and our communities lies within us all. Half of all deaths in the United States are linked directly back to lifestyle choices. This means that half of the deaths that happen in a particular year result from choices under our control. The lifestyle choices we make affect the quality of life we will live. Starting on a path to a healthier lifestyle does not need to be expensive or difficult. Begin with simple changes such as replacing the macaroni salad on your plate lunch with tossed salad, and using a break period to take a short walk around the area. If you smoke, the best thing you can do to improve your health is to stop. Making a change to a healthier lifestyle benefits those around you. If you stop smoking, you will no longer expose your loved ones to second-hand smoke. Developing healthy eating habits instills those habits in your children and in those close to you. Creating a healthy lifestyle for yourself and your family is the first step to creating a healthy community! Healthy lifestyle choices lead to overall health and well-being, and reduce the risk for premature illness and death. Health habits begin to take shape in childhood, so adults’ choices have a large impact on the current and future health of their families. Source: McGinnis, J.M., and Foege, W.H. (1993).
