Family PlanningEngaging in sexual activity—particularly intercourse—places young people at risk for infection with HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Adolescent girls who are sexually active are at risk for becoming pregnant. While the correct use of a male latex condom can reduce the risk of STD transmission, HIV and pregnancy², abstinence is the only method that is 100% effective for preventing pregnancy, HIV and other STDs. Other behaviors that increase the risks associated with sexual activity are having multiple lifetime partners and being under the influence of drugs or alcohol. ¹ CDC.
