Chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes are conditions that can develop slowly and worsen over a long period of time. These conditions are responsible for a great deal of illness, disability, and decreased quality of life for millions of Americans. Chronic diseases account for more than 75% of medical care costs in the

, and a majority of all deaths each year in the state and nation. Several factors play a part in the development of these diseases. Some factors are genetic, environmental, and behavioral. The behavioral factors are discussed in the “Healthy Lifestyles” section. Behaviors such as tobacco use, eating habits, and physical activity are strongly linked to chronic diseases.
