Cancer

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in Hawaii and in the United States.  From 2001-2005 there were almost 4,600 cancer deaths in Hawaii.  Lung cancer was the leading cause of cancer mortality (36.8/100,000* age-adjusted), followed by cancer of the colon and rectum (21.1).  Among men, the age-adjusted prostate cancer death rate was 18.8, and among women, the female breast cancer age-adjusted death rate was 18.0.  During the same period, incidence of cancer was considerably higher:  was 129.3/100,000 for prostate cancer, 126.0 for female breast cancer, 51.9 for lung cancer, 51.7 for cancer of the colon or rectum and 26.8 for cancer of the uterus.  Many cancer deaths can be prevented.  Early detection and treatment are crucial.  Research shows that recommended screening for cervical and colorectal cancers can help prevent these cancers by detecting precancerous lesions that can be treated before they become cancerous.  Additionally screening for cervical, colorectal and breast cancer can help find these diseases at an early, often highly treatable stage.

* All rates presented are age-adjusted to the 2000 census per 100,000 population.
