Hawaii Health Data Warehouse

Health insurance is a barrier that prevents millions of Americans from getting proper access to health care. A 2003 study conducted by the Hawaii Uninsured Project showed that 65% of uninsured population in Hawaii claimed feeling less confident about their overall health compared to 89% of insured population. Eighty-nine (89%) of the uninsured admitted being worried about the next time they get sick compared to 37% of the insured population.¹ Although Hawaii has one of the lowest uninsured rate in the nation, 9.9%, the numbers of uninsured are increasing due to costs of health care. ² The uninsured problem is not only an individual concern but a statewide problem: it affects the insured residents and private businesses through premium rates, and the quality and availability of services provided by the hospitals and public health facilities.
