InjuriesUnintentional injuries are the leading cause of death among Hawaii youth aged 11 to 19 years.¹ Over three-quarters of these unintentional deaths involve motor vehicles. Nationally, the leading cause of death among teens aged 15-19 years is motor vehicle crashes and alcohol use is associated with approximately 40% of all motor vehicle crash fatalities.² Seatbelt use is a proven method to reduce the risk of injury and death in motor vehicle crashes. Head injury is the leading cause of death in bicycle crashes and bicycle helmets are the single most effective way to reduce head injuries and fatalities.³ Related National Health Objectives for the Year 2010 15-19 Increase use of seatbelts to 92%.
